MIA 28th July 1943 as bombardier of B-17F / #42-3326 / MZ-? / 'Moore Fidite II'.

Target: the Focke Wulf aircraft assembly plant at Oschersleben, Germany.

Lost to fighter attacks in the North Sea, near Helgoland. 

2 men KIA*, 6 men MIA, 2 POW. MACR 0137.

*The bodies of the Navigator and Right Waist gunner washed ashore at Sylt, Denmark.

Six of the air crew are still missing in action.

1st Lieutenant Wyatt S. KENNON 

From Richmond, Virginia

KIA 14th May 1943 as bombardier of B-24D / #42-40126 / 'Annie Oakley Crack Shot'

Target: the Kiel shipyard ? Kiel Canal, Germany.

Shot down by fighters the aircraft crashed at Embuehren/Holstein, 11 miles west of Neumuenster. The pilot, navigator and bombardier managed to bail out before the aircraft crashed. Only the navigator survived. 9 KIA / 1 POW. MACR 2441.

The parachute of Lt Kennon was recovered at Gross- Vollstedt and it was reported that he was shot (9 miles east-north-east of the crash site) while trying to escape. 1Lt Kennon is buried at Ardennes Cemetery B-20-2.

KIA 22nd March 1943 as bombardier of B-24D / #41-23832 / 'Maggie'.

Took off from Shipdham with target Wilhelmshaven, Germany. 

Damaged by flak in the target area the aircraft lost altitude and fell behind the formation.

Attacked by fighters the crew baled out over the North Sea near Alte Mellum Island, all landing in the water. 6 KIA / 3 MIA / 2 POW. MACR 15585.

1Lt Rawls is buried at Ardennes Cemetery, A-39-35.

Captain Charles M. SHAW

From Liberty, Massachusetts

KIA 11th December 1943 as bombardier of B-24D / #41-24232 / 'M' /

'Calaban'. Took off from Shipdham airfield. Target: the Emden Industrial Area. On the bomb run the aircraft swerved and was struck by bombs from an aircraft above, knocking off the right wing outbound of #4 engine. The B-24 went into a spin, caught fire and crashed on the coastline near Wybelsum, 4 miles west of Emden.

9 KIA / 1 POW. MACR 1653.

2nd Lieutenant Sidney M. BURROUGHS

From Altlanta, Georgia.

 

Missing in Action on 18th November 1943 as bombardier of B-24H /#42-7603 / 'L' / 'Raggedy Ann' / 

took off from Shipdham airfield with target the Oslo/Kjeller airfield, Norway.

The aircraft went down in the North Sea. Reasons unknown, probably due to battle damage or fuel shortage. 10 MIA. MACR 1380. 

 

2Lt Burroughs is commemorated on the Cambridge Cemetery Tablets of the Missing.

2nd Lieutenant John R. KAUFMAN

From Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania

 

Missing in Action 17th July 1943 as bombardier of B-17F / #42-3275 / MZ-'Q' / 'Sack Time'. 

Target: Hamburg, Germany. This aircraft returned to base minus four crew members.  

 

German fighters attacked this B-17 and the enemy aircraft shells caused the life raft to part from its housing in the fuselage stowage.

The inflated life raft wrapped itself around the stabilizer and sent the aircraft in a 15.000 feet power dive.

Four crew members decided to bail out 25 miles from the German coast. (4 MIA). The pilot managed to pull out of the dive and to return to base.  2Lt Kaufman is commemorated on the Cambridge Cemetery Tablets of the Missing.

The upper right photograph (AAMIB UPL 48849) shows 'Sack Time' after returning from the 17th July 1943 mission.

From Detroit, Michigan

 

Missing in Action 1st May 1943 as bombardier of B-17F / #42-24610 / GN-'T' / 'Joe Btfsplk'

(a character from the satirical comic strip Li'l  Abner). 

Took off from Molesworth airfield. Target: the U-boat yards at St. Nazaire, France. 

Last seen heading towards Belle-Ile-on-Mer with one engine on fire. 7 MIA / 3 POW.

MACR 15727.

2Lt Walker is commemorated on the Cambridge Cemetery Tables of the Missing.
